The Power of the Tiny Zero
A zero is supposed to stand for…nothing. Non-existence, emptiness.
But somehow, this nothing is very powerful.
A number with lots of zeroes after it becomes very useful when it’s preceded by a dollar sign. It’s all the nothings that make us rich.
The tiny number 1, when followed by many zeroes and the words: ‘miles per hour’ means something is going very fast. It’s the string of nothings that propel the us forward.
Or, that same number 1, preceded by a small period and a string of nothings, indicates that something is very, very tiny. It’s all the nothings that do the shrinking for us.
Although it’s the dollar sign, the period, or the words that provide context, it’s the zero, the nothing, that gives us the meaning.
